The essence of this mission is about how to wrestle our cities back from the enemies who are standing at our gates, simply because we have failed in the past to maintain our position of what belongs to us as the children of the most high!

I used the word wrestle because it has to be by force and this is not a physical battle but of the spirit and according to Matthew 11:12 “[12] *From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence,* and the violent take it by force.

The enemy has had a field day enjoying what we should have been enjoying and he knows that if you should take over the gate you are able to fulfill the purposes of God and advance the kingdom, and that is certainly no good news to the enemy. And he will put up a resistance and I can guarantee it will be an easy handover of the keys!  You are not going to be asking him for permission either! Remember satan is not used to not being in control as we seem to have allowed him for a while, but the Lord is asking us to possess the gates of our enemies for this time and this season so we are able to bring in the great harvest he has ordained for us. Genesis 22:17.

However we need to get back to not only take back our inheritance but also to determine what goes in and out of those gates that leads us to the resources that the father has provided for us and we are going to be talking about how we can take back the gates and appoint gatekeepers to man those gates.

We are now in that season of wrestling to take back the kingdom of God and begin to rule and reign as children of God.  There has been many initiatives of the kingdom that has died simply because of lack of finances, people are unable to go on a mission to the nations to preach the gospel and bring about change which is the heart of God but due to lack of funds this has not been largely fulfilled.  The possessions/treasures are at the gates of our cities and they need to be taken back violently.

We have two dramatic incidences from the Bible about the opening of heaven which are gates and/or portals. We need a basic understanding of how the Gates of heaven operates and would imagine it’s a good way to start.

There are 2 main occurrences of the gates of heaven in the Bible and we would take one from the Old Testament and the New Testament.

JACOB (Israel)

Genesis 28:16-17 “[16] Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is *in this place, and I did not know it.” [17] And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Jacob is affirming about what he saw and the glorious event that took place in his dream and the promises of the covenant of God over his life and he was more than convinced as I am now that indeed if this was a place where he had an encounter with God it was explosive and marked the beginning of something new in Jacobs life.  God just doesn’t show up, but when he does it is often very dramatic, explosive, revelatory and ultimately a further proof of his majesty and awesome power.

It would not be farfetched if we actually say wherever we have the presence of God it becomes a gateway where we can hear his voice and heaven is opened to us. God was present at the Gateway that Jacob was describing. It might not necessarily be a physical manifestation like these in our days but you have a sense of his presence.  Jacob’s life was never the same again as this brought about a change in his life and ministry.  The covenant was reenacted again for his generation and he was reminded of what he needs to be and who he is.  The Lord reminded Israel (Jacob) about his identity and his inheritance and most importantly about the land and the promises of God that had been made to his father and grandfather.  There is also the reassurance of God’s abiding presence (Gen 28:15).  This is the kind of experience we need to have at the Gate where the Lord is  ever present with us.  Without his being with us we can’t even operate at the Gate. We need his affirmation and his ever abiding presence that gives us a great confidence in our roles as Gatekeepers.

JESUS- Mark 1:9-11 “In those days Jesus *came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. [10] And when he came up out of the water, immediately he *saw *the heavens opening *and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. [11] And *a voice came from heaven, *“You are my beloved Son;* with you I am well pleased.”

The opening of the heavens is an opening of a Gate.  The gate of heaven was literarily opened and Jesus saw it and the voice of the Father came forth like thunder to affirm him and to let those present know who Jesus was.  John the Baptist was going to baptize Jesus as has been spoken! When  Jesus came out of the water during the baptism, something explosive happened and that was the opening of the heavens and this is none other than God once again manifesting his power and majesty not only to Jesus but as a witness to all those that were present at the Baptism.

The ministry of Jesus did not start until the opening of the Gate of heaven! He waited 30 years for this event as had been prophesied.  It was the doorway or what I would call the trigger for everything that was going to happen to Jesus for the next 3and a half years of his ministry on earth.

I am of the firm opinion that we must in a way attain a certain level of righteousness as would be highlighted later in this book so we are able to stand against the enemy otherwise he has one on you, since he is the accuser of the brethren. I would highlight what this means and how we could avoid falling into this trap of not having our mind renewed!

It might be worth it at this stage to actually look at the different meanings of a Gate from the Dictionary for this chapter!

1. A structure that can be swung, drawn, or lowered to block an entrance or a passageway.

a. An opening in a wall or fence for entrance or exit.

b. The structure surrounding such an opening, such as the monumental or fortified entrance to a palace or walled city.

a. A means of access: the gate to riches.

b. A passageway, as in an airport terminal, through which passengers proceed when boarding or leaving an airplane.

4. A mountain pass.

5. The total paid attendance or admission receipts at a public event: a good gate at the football game.

6. A device for controlling the passage of water or gas through a dam or conduit.

7. The channel through which molten metal flows into a shaped cavity of a mold..

These are very interesting definition of a gate which is not limited to these but good enough for us to ponder on and I’ll expand a bit more on some of them, however some are self explanatory and that should give us more of an insight to the different aspects of what could be referred to as a gate.

We are probably more familiar with the first 2 definitions which are more self explanatory so I start with 3a-A means of access; the gate to riches; I mentioned earlier that a lot of the work of the kingdom are been stifled because of the much needed resources are in the hands of the enemies! Most of our gates are in the hand of the enemies and if we look at the role of the gatekeepers he is meant to determine who comes in and who goes out 1 Chronicles 9:26-27, 33. These gatekeepers during David’s reign were 212 and appointed by David and the Prophet or Seer, Samuel at the time. These gatekeepers had charge of opening the gates every morning and if we look closely at one of the duties the gatekeepers was also entrusted with the “treasuries” of the house of the Lord which in a way tallies with the definition of Gates to riches.

Gates are simply a passage way for “entry and exits” which are usually manned by Gatekeepers.

It is however note worthy to mention to avoid any confusion that these gates are not all necessarily physical gates but also spiritual gates.  For instance the gates of heaven was not in any way physical but spiritual even though there was a physical manifestations. However most of the gates we have to address are actually physical gates into our cities.  Some of the physical gates are still present in many of our cities however you don’t have to maintain a physical presence to actually be a Gatekeeper for the gates in our nations.  However it would be necessary from time to time to actually go those gates as you are led by the spirit of God to make proclamations and declarations of whatever the Lord might be laying in our spirit.

Gates can be described as the entrance into any city/town or village and the indication is when you are approaching the town or city on the motorway and you see the sign showing the name of the town/city village you are approaching this is Gateway and this might not necessarily have a physical gate but some do.  When I’m driving from New York to Canada there is a checkpoint where the immigration officers checks our passports and ensures you actually have a Visa to enter the nation.  These are effectively Gatekeepers and they determine who comes in and who goes out of the nation they are manning.  They are there 24/7 and do not leave their post.  They work in shifts and relieve one another but effectively the gates are manned at all times.  Effectively our Airports are also gateways which need to be manned at all times.  This is also a spiritual principle that needs to be applied to us as Spiritual Gatekeepers.

In order for us to have a full understanding of how we need to proceed with taking back the gates of our cities/nations I would draw my example from the story of the lame man at the beautiful gate which to me is like a picture of the church today.

One of the things that intrigues me the most is that the “Beautiful Gate” is an oxymoron in a sense because the question that comes to mind is how can this be a beautiful gate with a lame man from birth laid there daily as the scriptures describes and has been at this gate for a long time. He was laid at the beautiful gate daily and one could imagine what this man represents in the realm of the spirit.

The question is why did he did not go into the Temple where the possibility of him being healed was higher.  Perhaps there was no one that had possessed the anointing and the power to heal this man until the disciples were endued with power from on high (Acts 1:8). The Gate is a place of healing and the first “healing” miracle (the first miracle after Pentecost was the harvest of souls) was going to take place at the beautiful gate and the significance of this happening at this Gate cannot be overemphasized.

Because the God that we serve knows the end from the beginning and the situation of the lame man was meant to end with a beautiful story even though he was unaware of this at the time.  There was a divine arrangement which God had ordained before the man was even born because he knows our inward parts even when we were yet in our mother’s womb.

Psalm 139:13-16 “For you *formed my inward parts;
you *knitted me together in my mother’s womb. [14] I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.**Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. [15]  * My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in *the depths of the earth. [16] Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your *book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them.

This man was meant to usher in a new era of the manifest power of God thorough the Apostles and a fulfillment of the messianic age that was to come upon the inhabitants of that land-Isaiah 35:6.-“then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert;

This was a demonstration of what it was going to be like when we call upon the name of Jesus, which invokes the power and the anointing of the Holy Spirit! This is an apostolic miracle which most of them have never seen before and it was undeniable as they are all aware and saw the lame man laid daily at the beautiful gate!

The Lord is bringing healing to his church The Lord is bringing healing to his church and he is saying rise up and walk in the name of Jesus.  We are to move now in a new apostolic anointing with boldness and authority and not as a lame duck that couldn’t impact the society or our nation.  That man was laid daily at the beautiful gate and that tells me he was unable to do most things himself and unable to fulfill his destiny due to his lameness and had to be assisted by relatives or perhaps friends who brought him in the morning just in time for those going to the temple to give him alms and carry him back home at the end of the day. In effect he made no contribution at all to society and rather was taking from everyone that passed by him.

But after his healing the bible describes him as walking, leaping and praising the Lord! This is the position the church will have to maintain in the new dispensation that we are in.  There was lameness at the Gate but God brought back the authority and the anointing in HIS name at the Gate which was the entry point into the city/town.

This brought about a revival in the town as everyone saw clearly the manifestation of the power of God through the Apostles and wanted to hear more and this gave a great opportunity for Peter to preach as that singular act brought the crowd who by now listened to Peter’s sermon as the once lame man was now standing next to him. 3000 souls were saved at that moment

Jesus is not coming back for a lame bride but a warrior bride and its time we start to leap and praise his name.

The Lord took back the gate and restored it to what it was meant to represent which was “beautiful” and not that of lameness!

We are to maintain this GATES with the same authority and power as shown by Peter and John. This was a creative miracle as you would imagine and this speaks of God doing a new thing.  This was a new thing through the Apostles!  They were now living the life of a true Apostle and have graduated from being a disciple to one with a new level of authority that comes in the name of Jesus that they walked with for 3 years.

Nothing has changed since that time as he has transferred that power and authority to the church. Matthew 10:1 “And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.”

However Jesus was still with them and one could say they did this only because the Lord was with them in a sense physically but later this was now fulfilled as in John 14:12 ““Truly, truly, I say to you, * whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I * am going to the Father. [13] Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that * the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask me * anything in my name, I will do it.

Sadly today the church is not able to maintain the gates because of sin, unbelief and more largely because of disobedience to the call of God.  Most ministers start off very well but later on begin to serve their own ministry (given to them by God) and often forget the giver of the ministry and do their own thing. This is similar to the church in Ephesus in Revelation 2:4 (AMP) “But I have this [one charge to make] against you: that you have left (abandoned) the love that you had at first [you have deserted Me, your first love].

Nehemiah 2:2-3 “Therefore the king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart.” So I became dreadfully afraid, [3]  and said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire?”

Every believer should be saddened by the state of our nations as the Gates are burned with fire and indeed our Gates are possessed by our enemies but we have comfort in the word of the Lord for us to possess the gates of our enemies-Gen 22:17, so it is safe to say that at the moment in many of our nations the enemy is in possession of the gates. In many nations there is a mosque or other form of idolatry located at the entrances of our gates! We had an incidence reported in one of the Major newspapers for a plan to install headscarf shaped arches (gate) at both ends of East of London Brick Lane named “Hijab” Gate as part of a £1.85m cultural trail! We must understand what this means in the realm of the spirit! Now everyone will have to go through that veil in that sense daily whereas our Lord Jesus has already torn the veil into two! Mark 15:37-38 “[37] And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last. [38] Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”

2 Corinthians 3:16 “Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.”

Proposed Hijab Gate at Brick Lane

Local artist Brad Lochore said: “It seems absurd to be putting out the sign of a hijab.

“These are symbols of domination and repression. It’s the wrong sign and it will mean trouble. It’s territorialisation for one minority group. And that’s unacceptable.”

Artist Tracey Emin, who lives just off Brick Lane, wrote a letter to the council, saying: “I sincerely object to these proposals… the proposed material has no relevance to the heritage of the area or its future. She says further that this is culturally insensitive! Source Andy Dangerfield-BBC News 16 Feb 2010.

Obviously the Christians are as usual not the ones protesting but God will always use the “donkey” to speak where Christians are silent! Those who are erecting the Gate or influencing the plans are very much aware of what it means to possess a gate as whoever owns the gate owns the city!

We must repossess the gates of our nations from the enemy and be Gatekeepers and the watchman of the Lord!  We must in no way relinquish that position as this is so crucial to us having the full benefits of all that God has for us as a nation; Salvation, Finance, Commerce and Trade, Authority to rule and govern the sphere of influence in our nations.

We have a responsibility to maintain a posture and regain lost ground before the coming of our Lord Jesus!

The most important resource is the blessed assurance that God is with us!

Then we have to set a watch as we cannot start the process of rebuilding without the watchman who will stand at the Gates against the wiles of the enemy.

We also need an encourager to strengthen the hands of the workers whenever discouragement comes from the enemy.

Rebuilding requires both the sword and the word! But we know the weapons we need to employ when such situation occurs! 2 Corinthians 10:4-6 “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,  6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is completeDo not forget the needs of the people while the rebuilding is ongoing as both must work together. You must not do one to the exclusion of the other.

Get more people on board as the work progresses.

If this is of the Lord you will always get willing volunteers (Psalm 110:3-“Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth.

You must put a door! You need to secure the gates by appointing gatekeepers and watchmen, worshippers and priests to maintain the walls that had been rebuilt-Nehemiah 7:1-3 “Now when the wall had been built and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, [2]  I gave my brother Hanani and Hananiah the governor of the castle charge over Jerusalem, for he was  a more faithful and God-fearing man than many. [3] And I said to them, “Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. And while they are still standing guard, let them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, some at their guard posts and some in front of their own homes.”

There will be the declarations of the word of the Lord concerning our nations and we must put into remembrance his mercies over us while we allowed the gates to be burned and acknowledge our inactions!

In the United Kingdom our gates has been taken over largely by Islam and this need to be taken back in the spirit. Our nation has a redemptive gift of taking the gospel to the nations and sending missionaries around the world but the gate of Parliament has eroded that gift and replaced it with secularism, new age and completely anti-God.  I have begun the process of taking back this gate and stand as a Gatekeeper to make intercession and trusting for change at this important Gate that determines the laws and how we are governed.  This is by far the most important and no 1 gate for our nation.

The Lord encouraged me on one of my prayer walks to the Parliament.  I stopped by at No. 10 Downing Street which is the official residence of the Prime Minister of the UK. I stopped and started declaring Psalm 24 and a few minutes afterwards the gates swung open obviously to let a car in but a skeptic might call it a coincidence but I wouldn’t, but I would imagine it is only the person standing there that could identify that it was indeed a God moment and was encouraging for me.

Gates in our Nations

  • Entrances to our cities and nations on the motorway
  • Airports
  • Train Stations
  • House of Parliaments

The King is willing to help but we need to know how to approach the King v4….Nehemiah prayed to the God of heaven!!! There was genuine repentance with weeping and fasting.  Nehemiah was also quick to remind God of his promises if we remain faithful to him-Nehemiah 1:9 “‘but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.”

The key here is that we cannot even accomplish this important task without God and Psalm 127 is a very good example of this as this is made clear in the first few verses that unless the Lord does it the whole exercise is going to be in futility and will ultimately fail.

Nehemiah’s response was that of acknowledging the following:

The Problem – Nehemiah 1:3 “And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

Reflection – v4 “And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

Petition – v5-11 This was not the prayer but this was a petition to the Lord acknowledging who God is and reaffirming his faithfulness over time and reminding God about his promises concerning the nation of Israel, his chosen people

Confession/Repentance- v6-7 Nehemiah confessed and repented of the sins of the nation of Israel and acknowledged the fact that the nation have acted corruptly and not kept the commandments of the Lord hence the reasons why the Gates are burnt down.

Approaching the King- Now it was time for Nehemiah to approach the King as a cupbearer, but something happened! The King noticed from the countenance of Nehemiah that things are not fine, and moreso the King noticed that the sadness was of the heart Nehemiah 2:2! Question – Are you saddened by the Gates of your City that lies in ruins?

The next stage gave Nehemiah an opportunity to explain the cause of his sadness and of course he got a response from the King who was willing to help make things better for Nehemiah.

Remember one thing though; you must have served the King well to deserve the honour of being asked what would make you better.

How is your worship of the King of Kings? That determines how far you go in times of adversities.

The King asked the question (2v4) What are you requesting? And we find Nehemiah doing what most of us don’t do in church and that is to pray! We rely so much on our intellect and our strategy that we sometimes leave God out completely.

We must not for one moment think that Nehemiah did not have an idea or even know what he should be requesting from the King but he chose the right way as even the Lord Jesus does nothing except what he sees his father do (John 5:19-20 “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that (you may marvel.) and Nehemiah was not in any way presumptuous about anything but prayed again so he gets the heart of God concerning the assignment and the burden that the Lord has placed upon him!

Nehemiah’s made his requests to the King after he prayed and I’m persuaded his requests were based on heavens agenda and of course the heart of the father.  And he was emboldened by the Lord to ask for all he needed even a letter from the King to those that actually prevented the rebuilding of the city in the first place.  He found favour with the King as the Bible says “ the king granted him all that he asked for” v8.

We only need a few men to start the initial reassessment of the situation which should be carried out by the trusted few (those we can call the elders of the city).  We need a proper assessment of the condition of the ruins in order to ascertain what needs to be done.

Thereafter the announcements of what the commission or call is or better still the burden that the Lord has laid upon you and subsequently the recruitment of willing and able workers to help in carrying out the task. The announcements made it abundantly clear about the “reproach” of the gates lying in ruins and what was needed to restore.  The rebuilding was to remove the reproach and I dare say to you if you are reading this that there is a reproach in our cities and the Gates are burned, and the question is are you going to volunteer to rebuild and remove the reproach in your city? The Lord desires that we take back what the enemy has stolen so we can possess the gates of our enemies! God needs people who have a mind to work-Nehemiah 4:6 “So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.”, and this is the only way to silence the Sanballats and the Tobiahs who will always oppose God’s work!
